the fall semester is officially underway. on the one hand, i can't believe it's only the second week of classes. but, on the other hand, i can't believe it's ONLY the second week of classes! there's so much going on, and time flies, all at the same time...

football season. finally, it's here! a lot of my life has been consumed by football, in different ways.
1. the California golden bears, game 1: along with the whole unger crew, i made my way down to knoxville, tennessee for the first game of the '06 season. it was quite exciting, and quite fun, too. minus the actual game itself--the horrific loss wasn't so fun. i don't even remember the score, though. i think i selectively blocked it out of my memory. so anyway, moving on. the rest of the weekend was a blast. i got to see dan and matt, and hang out with them and their girlfriends, lizzy and jojo (respectively). It was so nice to catch up with them…and hang out with 9,999 other cal fans (more or less) do some tailgating and drinking, bump into random acquaintances from college and catch up with some of my dad’s fraternity bros. Knoxvill
e is unbelievable, football wise. It’s LIFE down there. It’s all people talk about. Orange is everywhere (not burnt orange—tennessee orange!). they even have tennessee vols GUM. that's what i brought back for my co-workers. and, the people are just nice—too nice for some people’s liking. I happen to really like it, but sometimes they take it a little too far. Like saying our “football boys are real fighters and never gave up.” That’s really not what I want to hear after an embarrassing loss. And, they do a prayer at the beginning of the game. Also not a fan of that. I really don’t think god cares about football. If some people want to pray, great. But it’s a public university and I don’t think it’s right to lead an entire stadium in a prayer.
2. the Texas Longhorns, game 1: ya, they beat the UNT (university of north texas). Most people were calling it a scrimmage, because all they were thinking about was game 2…
3. the Texas Longhorns, game 2: Hillel hosted a big tailgate before the Texas/OSU game. The biggest game of all time, or something like that. im sure it goes without saying, but Texas lost. Big time. About 50 students came to Hillel to watch on the big screen and eat kosher hot wings. Ya, Texas Hillel kicks ass. While we were watching on the Texas game on the movie screen, I was watching another game on a small TV set, on mute…
4. the California golden bears, game 2: a big fat W! Awesome.
5. Monday night football: went to happy hour last night, with ari and Andrew at a new sports bar, for the first Monday night football of the season. Pretty exciting. But more impressive than the game was the dessert ari ordered, even after a HUGE meal: krispy kreme bread pudding. It was good. But it BETTER be good--it’s donuts with more sugar and ice cream added!
6. futbol: okay, it’s a stretch, it’s not exactly “football,” but I had my first soccer game of the fall season last weekend. We lost and I didn’t score, as usual, but we played well and I was thoroughly sore.
In other news, not related to football, I have done some fun things in the past few weeks…
Austin Hot Sauce Festival: ate lots of chips and hot sauce and salsa and jellies.
Book Club: we had out first meeting and are reading a book called “harvesting the heart.”
San Antonio: went to SA with sandi to see agi, roger and the babies. Sandi had never been there, so it was fun to show her the riverwalk, etc.
Vegetarian Restaurants: A few weeks back, we had girls night dinner at Nu Age Café. It was fun, but definitely a weird place. Then over the weekend, I went to a café with ari that in the hippie part of austin. Their tofu was amazing, but I was definitely hungry when I left. J
Visitors: ari e. was in town for the OSU game. So good to see him. Do you want a mention in my blog? Come visit!
Life is good.
